Travelling Fuerteventura by E Bike
The E Bike, has always enjoyed growing popularity and has of course already conquered the holiday island of Fuerteventura. There are leisurely excursions on which expert guides will lead you through the stunning lava landscape of the Canary Islands on paved roads and on narrow paths. The excursions have different themes, the routes are set and you also learn a lot about the flora, fauna, history and culture of your holiday destination.
But there are also more demanding tours in which motorized mountain bike-like wheels conquer the unpaved terrain of the beautiful island. However, these tours are primarily about the action-packed driving experiences and they are designed for more experienced mountain bikers. The routes over hill and dale require practice and a good dose of driving skills.

Everything You Need to Know About the E bike

Everybody has probably already heard of e-bikes by now, but not everyone knows what exactly what it is, so there is a little bit of a reluctance to participate in such a guided ebike tour. For this reason, we have collected the most important facts and interesting information about the electric bike for you. This way, you can find out all details about this type of bike and enjoy these excellent tours in the future. Especially since, the e bike is a lot of fun.
How Does the E bike Differ From an Ordinary Bicycle?

At first glance, both bikes look the same. A difference actually only becomes evident on closer inspection. E Bike stands for electric bike. It has an electric motor that can be used as needed, to drive the wheel in addition to the pedals. Depending on the model, the engine is located on the front or rear wheel or on the bottom bracket (center engine). It is powered by a so-called traction battery and has a sensor for crankshaft motion detection. Depending on the manufacturer and model, the Ebike has an indicator on the charging status and you can also set the intensity of the motor power.
Everything else in application and operation is similar to a conventional bicycle. You sit on the saddle with your hands on the steering wheel and pedal to get moving. The power of the engine is pleasantly noticeable when driving uphill, against the wind or when driving through sand, because the drive through the engine is a tremendous relief. In summary, one can say that if you can ride a bicycle, you can easily handle the ebike.
Since When Do E bikes Exist?
The first patents were granted in the 1980s in the United States. However, e-bikes already existed before 1900, although they were called differently. Over the years, the initial concept from the 80s has been optimized. And especially in the late 90s there have been some groundbreaking developments. But it was not until 2005 that the sale of the bikes began to boom, and between 2012 and 2016, the number of e-bikes on German roads more than doubled from 1.3 to 2.8 million. Sales continued to increase until 2018.
How does an eBike work?

Although the e-bikes used for trips on Fuerteventura are colloquially called “e bikes”, they are actually pedelecs. Because it is not the case that the wheel moves by itself at the touch of a button. In this case it is an assistant, which reduces the physical effort required of the cyclist when pedaling. And the drive by the motor itself can be determined by turning it on and off. The cranksdhaft motion detection sensor activates the engine only when the driver is pedaling. In addition, the engine is deactivated immediately when braking.
Since the engine of the e-bike is absolutely emission-free, you can penetrate into the beautiful, untouched nature of Fuerteventura with this bike with absolutely good conscience. The traction battery that powers the engine is, of course, rechargeable. The driving force of the batteries is sufficient to reach a driving speed of around 25 km/h.
How Long Does the Battery Charge Last?
This is dependent on several factors:
- Used engine power
- Weight of the driver
- Tire pressure
- Degree of slope: uphill
- The wind against
In general, the energy of a battery lasts for 40 – 120 km and is therefore absolutely sufficient for the entire trip.
For Whom Is an E bike Suitable?
The E bike is equally suitable for beginners and advanced, because the use of the motor drive can be self-determined. Experienced participants can turn off the engine and let off steam and the less fit can fully enjoy the excursion without much effort, thanks to the energetic support of the engine.
E bike Hire Fuerteventura

If you do not feel like the company of strangers and want to discover Fuerteventura by e-bike on your own or only with your family, it is recommendable to hire an e-bike. In the tourist centers such as Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma, Jandía and Morro Jable there are some e-bike rental stations with a great selection. The bike helmet is usually included when you rent an e bike. Please wear it, because it protects your head in case of an accident and when cycling in Spain is mandatory.
Is an Electric Bike like a Moped?
This is not the case with the excursion bicycles on Fuerteventura, for these types of bicycles the engine is only activated when the driver steps on the pedals. However, there are generally more powerful models among the e-bikes that are actually quite similar to mopeds. In this case, the bike moves alone by pressing a button. Both models, however, offer the cyslist the option to move the bike only by using the pedals.
Do You Need a Driver’s License for Driving an E-bike?
Since the E Bikes only reach a maximum speed of 25 km / h, these are not subject to approval. This means that the driving does not require a driver’s license. However, depending on the operator, there may be requirements concerning the minimum age of participants. Therefore, you should inquire about the age limits when booking with children.
