Things to Know About Los Lobos
The History of Isla de Lobos
The young island is estimated to be between 15,000 to 30,000 years old and was created due to volcanic activity. Isla de Lobos translated means island of wolves. The name goes back to a rather sad story of the island. It is due to the expulsion and extermination of a colony of monk seals, which was located here until the 15th century. Spanish sailors hunted and killed most of them for their meat and fur. The rest of the animals eventually fled the island. The Spaniards confused the seals with sea lions (Spanish: Lobo Marino) and that's how the island got its name.
