Information About the Segway
What Is a Segway and Where does it Come From?

The Segway was invented in the early 2000s. At that time it was actually designed as a new kind of electric wheelchair. But it was finally recognized that the device could also be used as a one-man means of transport. The name “Segway” is a registered brand name and as such may only be used by the manufacturer Segway Inc. itself. The Segways essentially consist of a standing platform, two wheels and a handlebar. The two motors are powered electrically by the integrated battery. The entire interior is sealed so that the Segway can also be used in the rain. In addition, some types are off-road and can climb slopes of up to 45 degrees, making off-raod tours by Segway possible without any problems.
How does a Segway Work?

You are probably wondering why the Segway does not fall over. After all, it is only on two wheels. This is ensured by an extensive sensor system that permanently measures the inclination of the Segway including its driver and controls the wheels so that the device itself can keep its balance. This system makes the driving of the Segway so extremely easy. Driving forward, braking and turning are done by shifting your body. That’s why you won’t find any controls on the vehicle. If you lean forward slightly, the Segway will start to move. Bend back, it brakes. Left and right-hand drives are also carried out with the corresponding displacement of the body. When driving downhill, a sensor measures the speed and automatically slows down the Segway if it exceeds 20 km/h. Once you have done a few trial laps by Segway, you will be able to use it intuitively.
How Far Can You Get on a Segway?
The Segways have powerful lithium-ion batteries. The manufacturer specifies the range at around 35 kilometers. How long a battery charge actually lasts depends on various influencing factors. These are:
- Weight of the driver: The higher the weight of the driver, the shorter the range.
- Incline levels: Repeated and strong ascents shorten the range.
- Tire air pressure: If the tire pressure is low, the rolling resistance of the wheels increases and reduces the range.
- Underground: Loose or stony ground slows down the Segway and reduces the range.
- Headwind: Headwind creates resistance when driving forward and increases energy consumption.
- Driving style: Permanent fast driving or repeated strong accelerations uses a lot of energy and has a negative effect on the range.
As a rule of thumb, one can apply: Anything that increases the resistance when driving forward leads to higher energy consumption and thus shortens the range.
